Your humble System Administrator here with a brief update

As most of you have been painfully aware, shiner.info was offline for a while, and when it came back, several things weren't working; e.g. forums, gallery, file downloads..

This outage was the result of a power supply blowing up in my old server. Rather than try to rebuild the old server, I moved the data over to a new, faster machine. I also upgraded to Fedora Core 5, Apache 2.2, MySQL 5.0.22, PHP 5.1.4...in short, a lot of major upgrades. It came as no surprise that everything from the old server didn't work out of the box with this combination, but I dragged my feet in dealing with most of the problems -- I've had too many things to deal with otherwise (busy job, new house etc.)

Eddie Bindt very graciously stepped in and fixed many of the problems; without him, we would not have a site right now. Eddie is also currently the official webmaster, and has been doing a great job. However, there are some things on the server he does not have access to, since this machine runs more than just shiner.info.

To make a long story short, I was able to upgrade the forum software and the gallery software to the latest versions, and I BELIEVE I have fixed most of the glitches. The forum theme did have to change, as the old theme had not been updated for the current version of the software, but other than that everything should be pretty normal.

I apologize for taking so long to get these issues corrected, and once again wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to Eddie for all his hard work. He is now working on the next generation of www.shiner.info, using the Drupal content management system!

2004-08-23 running YellowDog 4 ...

As priviledged betatester for YellowDog I am pleased to announce that Yellowdog 4 runs smoothly on my 2nd shiner. Installing is not an option yet, as we need to find a way to boot. For now I did an upgrade from my existing YellowDog 3 system with yum. Upgrading went easy, although some tweaking is required to get the new glibc on the machine. I will post detailed instructions as soon as possible ! I am running a special build 2.6.8 kernel, same version as on YellowDog 4.

2003-07-01 Test of 9500 ROM SIMM in ANS by Mike Grimsley

I have tested a 9500 ROM SIMM in my ANS 500. Upon boot it will chime and then open a gray screen with a mouse pointer where it will then stop booting. It does however seem to have full functionality in Open Firmware and will boot both Linux and NetBSD bootloaders. I will continue to test this ROM and would appreciate any suggestions as to how to boot other OS under this ROM. Attached is the results of several commands under the OF.
